Two broad types of attitudes: explicit attitudes are one we hold consciously and can readily in our minds. Implicit attitudes are covert attitudes that are expressed in subtle and automatic. Direct contact- direct contact with a person, idea, situation. Direct instruction- direct instruction by parents or some other individuals. Interaction with others- being around other people with the attitude. Learning theory- learned through observational learning, or classical or operant conditioning. Dissonance theory- assumes that inconsistency among attitudes propels people in the direction of attitude change. Change our conflicting behavior to much attitude. Change our conflicting cognition to justify behavior. Give more weight to people perceived as experts, trustworthy, attractive, Persuasion: the process by the which one people tries to change the beliefs, opinion, position, or course of action of another person through argument, pleading, or explanation. *sources- the communicator of the message and/or similar to you. *message- the actual message including its clarity, organization, and content.
