PSYC 2000 Chapter : Module 36 39 Motivation And Emotion
Document Summary
Motivation is a need or desire that energizes and directs behavior. It drives us and gives us the push to do something. Instinct is a complex behavior that is rigidly patterned throughout a species and is unlearned. It is inborn, and there is no need to learn it. Drive-reduction theory: a physiological need creates an aroused tension state (a drive) that motivates an organism to satisfy the needs. Homeostasis: the tendency to maintain a balanced or constant internal state. Incentive: a positive or negative environmental stimulus that motivates behavior. Needs and incentives work together to strengthen psychological drives. But there are some drive reducing behaviors increase motivation. Example: band or game we like which cause us to do the activity more. And we perform behaviors in the absence of physiological need. Humans are motivated to seek optimum levels of arousal. Maslow"s hierarchy of needs: pyramid of human needs; lower needs must be satisfied before higher ones.
