Document Summary
Chapter 6 cognitive development: piaget and vygotsky. Piaget"s approach to cognitive development: huge impact, wanted to know thought process behind answer, start with processes based on physical actions, progresses to changes in mental operations, qualitative changes. Jean piaget had a profound impact on both psychology and education. Binet, piaget developed an interest in the intellectual development of children. Based upon his observations of his own and other children, he concluded that children were not less intelligent than adults, they simply think differently. Piaget would ask children questions, and listen to their answers. He wasn"t really interested in what their answers were, or if the answers were wrong or right. He was more interested in the thought process behind their answers. Piaget"s stage theory describes the cognitive development of children. Cognitive development involves changes in cognitive process and abilities. In piaget"s view, early cognitive development involves processes based upon physical actions and later progresses into changes in mental operations.
