The first stage is divided into three phases: latent, active, and deceleration. Latent phase: the contractions become more frequent, stronger, and gain regularity, and most of the change of the cervix involves thinning, or effacement. Up to 20 hours for 1st time, 10-12 hours for 2nd time. Active phase: phase of the most rapid cervical dilatation. 5 hours for 1st time, 2 hours for 2nd time. Deceleration phase: transition cervical dilation continues, but at a slower pace, until full dilation. 2-3 hours for 1st time, shorter for 2nd time. This is when an episiotomy may be administered- incision in perineum to increase vaginal opening. Can be immediate, or up to 30 min.
