I agree with descartes, to an extent, when he says, i think; therefore i am . To me, he is saying that if one thinks, then one exists. If you have thoughts and think, then you are obviously alive and existing in society. How you think is what decides your independence from society. We think, but our thoughts often reflect how our society thinks as a whole. The degree to which we allow society to influence us determines the degree to which we exist. We are all individuals, but are all expected to follow the same rules. I also partially agree with marx in his quote. Karl marx: i do not think; society thinks through me. People can say they aren"t influenced by society and that they think for themselves, to think for ourselves, but that society influences the way we think and how we act. but it is not true.
