Evolution of photography - the concept of the camera proceeded photography by centuries. Camera obscura: means dark chamber, forerunner of the modern camera. Sunlight passing thru a small hole in the wall of a darkened room projects onto the opposite wall an inverted img of whatever lies outside. Leonoardo da vinci described a solar eclipse device of muslim scientist alhazen as an aid to observation & picture making. It functioned like a camera, but had no means of preserving/copying imgs. In 1826, the first vague photographic image was made by joseph nic phore ni pce by using chemicals that were sensitive to light (pewter). Following this, the painter louis-jacques-mand daguerre improved this chem. process w/ silver and produced some of the first satisfactory photographs: daguerreotypes. At first, bc exposure times were long, it could only take pictures of stationary objects.
