GEO 101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Core Countries, Anthropocene, Rangeland
Document Summary
Anthropocene: word meant to signal a new geological era in earth"s history. The industrial revolution impacted the environment through the discovery of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. Fuels from biological materials from living or recently living organisms and include wood, waste, gas, and alcohol fuels. Electricity generated from hydropower through the use of gravitational force of falling or flowing water. Energy earth receives from the sun(solar panels) Conversion in which turbines convert the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical or electric energy that can be used for power. Energy derived from the heat of the earth. Core countries consume the most of these energy resource. Deforestation: permanent clearing and destruction of forests. Rain forests now cover less than 7% of land surface. Cultivation: using the lands to grow crops. Most rapid expansion of cropland has been in peripheral countries.
