Document Summary

Sexual orientation: one"s erotic, romantic, and affectional attraction to the same gender, to the opposite gender, or to both. Placing people in definite, distinct categories is difficult and fosters stereotypes. A simplistic definition of gay or lesbian is a person who is attracted primarily to people of the same gender to satisfy sexual and emotional needs. Those stages may be overly simplistic and ethnocentrically biased. Homophobia: the extreme and irrational fear and hatred of gay and lesbian people: can be more accurately and inclusively referred to as heterosexism to encompass both sexual orientation and gender identity. Bisexual: romantically and sexually attracted to members of either gender. Kinsey created a scale of sexuality: this scale is problematic because it assumes a binary, when sexuality is much more complex than that. Genetic factors: supports the idea that people"s sexuality is programmed through their genes, research supports a genetic component to sexuality.
