Document Summary

Emphasis is on the role of the social environment in personality development. Eight stages: stage 1: basic trust vs. Basic mistrust: stage 2: autonomy vs. shame and doubt, stage 3: initiative vs. Guilt: stage 4: industry vs. inferiority, stage 5: identity vs. role confusion, stage 6: intimacy vs. Isolation: stage 7: generativity vs. stagnation, stage 8: ego integrity vs. The society in which one lives makes certain psychic demands at each stage of development, called crises. The most important task of adolescence is to develop a sense of identity. Falling in love is an attempt to define identity. Adolescents and young adults experiment with roles that represent the many possibilities for their future identity. Erikson also termed psychosocial moratorium: this describes a period of free experimentation before a final sense of identity is achieved. A sense of identity is only achieved after a period of questioning, reevaluation, and experimentation.
