Document Summary

The christian tradition did not spring up on its own; it has its roots in the jewish tradition and faith that jesus himself grew up in. Likewise, the christian idea of the resurrection also stems from jewish beliefs. St. paul, who wrote many letters to christian communities throughout the region, spoke very often on this topic to connect the significance of jesus" resurrection with jewish eschatology. According to st. paul, jesus was only the first of many to be raised, and his resurrection foreshadowed the imminent resurrection of the entire christian and jewish communities. During the time of jesus, there were many who claimed to be apocalyptic prophets, but jesus" resurrection from death set him apart from the rest and legitimized his ministry. This was so central to jesus" ministry that st. paul went so far as to say that unless a christian believed in the death and resurrection of jesus, his faith was useless.
