Labs and other diagnostic procedures involving the urine: urinalysis: gives info on : specific gravity: degree of concentration of a substance in the urine. If dehydrated, the sg will be elevated (to 1. 035). Lots of water po sg will be decreased (next to 1. 002 almost clear). Measures glucose in urine, any blood, nitrites (indicative of infection), protein, ketones (by product of burning fat for energy). Discuss the clean catch specimen: urine for culture and sensitivity: lab checks urine for growth of any bacteria. Iv dye is given and xrays are taken to show the kidney, ureters, bladder and urethra: cat scan: obtains xray pictures of the kidneys/ureters/bladder in a (cid:515)slice of bread(cid:516) fashion. Shows structural problems, masses, kidney stones: bedside nurse-operated (cid:515)bladder scanner(cid:516): shows how much urine is left in the bladder after a void.
