Private acceptance: people conform to behavior of others because they genuinely believe that they are right: energy conservation study: people conserved more when flyer said that neighbors were saving energy. Public compliance: conforming publicly without necessarily believing in what the group is doing. When you are motivated to be accurate, you are more susceptible to social influence: eyewitness study: people conformed to wrong answer of which picture was the perpetrator when they were offered for getting the answer right.
