A patient with a recent leg amputation had just come back from surgery and was still partially sedated. The nurse was called away from the patient and forgot to raise the side rails. The patient, being partially sedated, tried to get up from the bed and fell. The nurses lawyer argued in defense that the nurse was following the physician"s orders (catalano, 2015): personally, yes, i do agree with the jury"s decision. The patient was partially sedated when the incident occurred. Based on this, the nurse should have stayed with the patient, raised the side rails, or had another nurse watch the patient until she came back. The incident was preventable; however, we all make mistakes that could be preventable. Hopefully, nurses will learn from this case study and take appropriate action so this does not occur again (catalano, 2015): normally the nurse has to follow the physician"s orders.
