MUSIC 0711 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Benny Goodman, Casa Loma Orchestra, Jimmy Mcpartland
Document Summary
He began his early studies at the local synagogue and later at chicago"s hull house. In chicago he performed with fellow chicagoans, drummer dave tough, alto saxophonist frank teschemacher, trumpeter jimmy mcpartland, and russian-born pianist art hodes. He later joined ben pollock"s orchestra, where he recorded with the orchestra. Goodman made his first recorded solo with pollack"s orchestra in chicago, as well as his only recordings on alto and baritone saxophones. Goodman was quite active as a studio recording musician who got into jazz at the suggestion of fellow musicians and later john hammond. He formed his first bug band in 1934 and immediately began to have success as one of the premiere dance bands in the country: worked as a studio musician for radio and recording companies. One of the most important moves that goodman made as a new band leader was to hire fletcher henderson to write arrangements for the newly formed group.
