Document Summary

Cell: basic structural and functional unit of life. You cannot synthesize cells from scratch, you must start with preexisting cells. Organismal activity depends on individual and collective activity of cells (a lot of information is passed in between cells, the work as a unit) Biochemical activities of cells are dictated by subcellular structure. What cells do reflects their structure; their structure reflects what they can do. Ie. nerve cells job is to receive and transport information; they have long axon terminals to do so with dendrites end to end. Ie. sperm cells have a long flagella and strong head, because their main job is to get to the uterus for fertilization. There are many different types of cells (about 220 different types), not all cells contain all organelles, or even a nucleus. There is a lot of variation: three main components of a cell.
