Erect body, level head, arms to the side with palms facing forward and feet pointing forward. Plane: flat, imaginary, two dimensional surface in space. Sagittal: divides the body into left and right sides. Infinite sagittal planes and one that midsagittal that divides equally terms : medial and lateral. Frontal (coronal) plane: divides the body into front and back portions. Adduction or abduction occur in frontal plane. Transverse (horizontal) plane: divides the body into upper and lower parts. Oblique plane: any plane that combines two or three cardinal planes. Virtually all movement will occur in a combination of planes. Axes: a line that runs perpendicular to a plane and is the pivot point around which motion occurs.
