Understanding the better than average effect: motives (still) matter | jonathon d. brown (2011) Most think they are better than avg in terms of: virtuosity, honorability, morality, capability, competence, talent, compassion, understanding, sympathy. Bta effect reduced when: attrib compared are uncontrollable and unambiguous, difficult rather than easy skills, comparisons made directly, have to justify claims, when compared to specific individual rather than aggregate. Originally thought to be motivated by self enhancement needs. Focus of study = show bta effect motivated by desire to preserve, enhance, restore feeling of self-worth. Cog models assume bta effect like every other comparative judgement task: but ppl behave diff when emotionally invested. If don"t care about possessing quality shouldn"t be motivated to believe they possess it in abundance: fails to take importance into account. Study 1 correlational study of assoc b/w attrib imptnce & magnitude of bta effect. Hyp = bta stronger for important attributes.
