Rejection Sensitivity and Executive Control: Joint Predictors of Borderline Personality Features | Ayduk

Abstract & Intro
- HYP = expect high Rejection Sensitivity (RS) to be related to incr vulnerability for Boderline
Personality (BP) features esp those w/ difficulties in Executive Control (EC)
- Result – those high RS assoc w/ incr BP feat among ppl low in self reported EC
a. Relat alternated when high in self-reported EC
- BP impulsive & Self injurious behav, extreme fluctuations in mood & sense of self, volatile
relat; chaos and crisis for individ and other in his/her path
a. RS disposition to defensively/anxiously expect readily perceive and intensely react to
rejection in sit where rejection possible
- EC ability to override prepotent, reflexive reactions in favor less accessible, subdominant resp
- Propose that combo of high RS and low EC can generat feat comprising BP
- High RS, high EC should be able to incr access to cog “cool” processes that enable reflection
and rational problem
- High RS similar dynamics w/ BP disorder: amplifying minor disagreements & interpreting as
personal attacks
a. Early experience of rejection may lend people to dev anxiety and fear about possibility of
future rejection & expect that inevitable
b. Hyper vigilant for rejection cues, readiness to perceive intentional hurt in sig others’
ambig/innocuous behav
c. Resp to rejction w/ greater negativity
d. Destructive reactions lead to self-fulfilling prophecy
e. May share similar etiology w/ BP abusive & rejcting family env
- EC = ability to override habitual automatic react in favor of less dom but situation approp one in
voluntary & effortful manner
a. Regulated by prefrontal cortex and basal ganglia
b. Effortful/attentional control
c. BP patients impairments in EC
i. Deficits in conflict resolution
ii. High self reported EC decreased susceptibility to cog conflict and better
interpersonal & personal funct
- Goal of this rsrch = test moderation hyp that EC attenuates link b/w RS and BP
a. Hyp = RS individ high in EC , link b/w RS & BP should be attenuated
i. EC should enable them to override prepotent habitual thought patts & inhibit dom &
maladaptive behavior
