Goal Disengagement and Systemic Inflammation in Adolescence | Miller and Wrosch (2007)
Abstract and Intro
- Notion that persistence = essential for success & happiness say that it’s adaptive, maximizes
prob that life goals realized & fosters well-being/good health
- Givng up often equated to helplessness & depression
- But some rsrch suggests tht disengaging when unlikely to realize goal may be most adaptive
a. Withdrawing from unattainable goal better well-being, normal cortisol secretion, fewer
symptoms of everyday illness
- Tracked changes in levels of C-Reactive Protein (CRP) == marker of systemic inflammation
a. When body detects infection/injury, launches inflammatory resp
b. Excessive inflammation diff medical conditions
- HYP = expect tht subj experiencing difficulties disengaging from unattainable goal have higher
lvls of CRP
Method
- Questionnaire w/ 10 items measuring how subj usually reacted when they had to stop pursuing an
importan goal
a. 4 items measured tendencies to disengage (i.e. “it’s easy for me to reduce my effort towards
the goa”)
b. 6 measured tendencies to reengage w/ new goals
- Collected blood through antecutibal venipuncture following 12 hour fast
- Collected info regarding number of potential confounds
a. Demographic, behavioral (smoking, adiposity) characteristics linked w/ systemic
inflammation
i. Smoking indexed as whether or not cigareets were used daily
ii. Adiposity as BMI
b. Modeled as covarites, except in case of smoking (reported by only 3 women)
Results
- Poor disengagement 2x as rapid incr in CRP
- Average disengagement CRP incr at rate of 0.13 mg/L
- Easily disengage inflammation declined slowly over year
- As adiposity (BMI) went up, so did inflammation
- Neither reengagement now interaction of disengagement & reengagement assoc w/ CRP

Goal disengagement and systemic inflammation in adolescence | miller and wrosch (2007) Notion that persistence = essential for success & happiness say that it"s adaptive, maximizes prob that life goals realized & fosters well-being/good health. Givng up often equated to helplessness & depression. But some rsrch suggests tht disengaging when unlikely to realize goal may be most adaptive: withdrawing from unattainable goal better well-being, normal cortisol secretion, fewer symptoms of everyday illness. Tracked changes in levels of c-reactive protein (crp) == marker of systemic inflammation: when body detects infection/injury, launches inflammatory resp, excessive inflammation diff medical conditions. Hyp = expect tht subj experiencing difficulties disengaging from unattainable goal have higher lvls of crp. Collected blood through antecutibal venipuncture following 12 hour fast. Collected info regarding number of potential confounds: demographic, behavioral (smoking, adiposity) characteristics linked w/ systemic inflammation. Smoking indexed as whether or not cigareets were used daily.
