Signals travelling in neurons: reticular theory nervous syst consisted of large network of fused nerve cells, neuron theory nervous syst consisted of distinct elements or cells. Staining chemical technique tht colored nerve cells led to acceptance of neuron theory. Cerebral cortex = 2mm thick layer that covers surface of rain: responsible for perception, language, memory, thinking. Modular organization specific functions served by specific areas. Neurons: cells that create and transmit electrical signals. Neurons transduce stimuli into electrical sig and comm w/ other neurons. Cell body mechanisms that keep neuron alive.
