CD 225 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4C: Language Disorder, Language Development
Document Summary
Assessment and intervention overlap and are parts of the same process. Slp"s task in assessment is to distinguish between children who have a disorder and who do not. Bilingual children, english language learners, and dialect speakers: 21 % of us school-age population speak a language other than english at home. About 1/3 of these children are ells. African american children, as the second largest minority racial group in the country, Make up about 17% of the children enrolled in public schools: any assessment of children with culturally and linguistically diverse background must recognize the relationship of the risk of li and ses. Diagnostic methods for these children vary widely. These screenings are only set to determine the presence of absence of language problems: an interdisciplinary team of child specialists may handle referrals and evaluations. Information from referrals, evaluations, interviews need background from which to begin investigating for possible language impairment and determining what that impairment entails.
