Respiration includes (1) ventilation, (2) exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between air into lungs, (3) transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood, (4) exchange of o2 and co2 between blood and tissues. Regulation of blood ph by changing co2 levels. Voice production: air movement through the vocal chords. Olfaction: sensation of smell comes from airborne molecules taken into the nose. Innate immunity: prevents microorganisms from entering the body. Respiratory is divided into upper respiratory tract (external nose, nasal cavity and pharynx) and lower respiratory tract (larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs) Nose has the external nose and nasal cavity. External nose = visible structure outside of face, mostly hyaline cartilage, bridge is made of bone. Nares (nostrils) are external openings of the nose. Nasal septum divides the nasal cavity in left and right. Hard palate makes the floor of the nasal cavity, separates nasal cavity and oral cavity.
