Document Summary

Aristotle - the three elements of speech making: speaker, subject, and person addressed. Audience determines the object of the speech and the effectiveness. 5 types: captive, committed, contrary, concerned, and casual. Listeners look for weakness in your arguments and can ambush you. Belief, attitudes, values, demographics( age, gender, culture, etc. ) Ex: don"t speak of 9/11 if they were not alive. Pick a topic like health that they are all interested in. Do not assume too much from gender differences. The belief that customs, practices, and behaviors, of your own culture are superior to any other culture. Identification is the affiliation and connection between the speaker and audience. The more the audience likes the speaker the more inclines they are to listen to you. Increase likeability by complimenting to audience saying you like them, and showing concern towards them. Humor that isn"t offensive, story telling (promotes social cohesion) We identify with individuals who appear to be similar as us.
