Document Summary

Getting from one person"s intention to the impact of that person"s message on a listener involves several steps at which error and misunderstanding may occur. Interpersonal gap: the senders intentions differ from the effect on the receiver. Such gaps are more likely to occur in close relationships than among strangers. Nonverbal behavior has five functions: provides info, regulating interaction, defining nature of the relationships, interpersonal influence, impression management. Nonverbal behavior provides information about people"s moods or meaning. Nonverbal behavior plays vital part in regulating interaction. Ex: woman looks at partner continuously, tone dropping on her last word, husband starts speaking because he knows she is finished. By expressing intimacy and carrying signals of power and status, nonverbal behavior helps to define the relationships we share with others. Ex: lovers touch each other and stand closer to each other than less intimate partners. Interpersonal influence is goal-oriented behavior designed to influence someone else.
