Interpersonal conflict: occurs whenever one person"s motives, goals, beliefs, opinions, or behavior interfere with, or are incompatible with, those of another. Conflict occurs when one"s wishes or actions actually obstruct or impede those of someone else. Moods and preferences of any two people will occasionally differ. There are certain tensions that are woven into the fabric of close relationships that will, sooner or later, always cause some strain. Influences correlated with amount of conflict: personality, attachment style, stage of life, similarity, sleep, alcohol. High in neuroticism have more, high in agreeableness have few conflicts and react more constructively. Anxious about abandonment people respond with greater hurt and distress. Young adults may experience more conflict than they"re used to. Those with less sleep encounter less conflict throughout the day. Alcohol makes conflict even worse, adds fuel to the fire . Categories that instigate conflict: criticism, illegitimate demands, rebuffs, and cumulative annoyances.
