Average length of a marriage in u. s. is 18 years. All time low of adult population that is married. Romances of same sex couples are just as stable as those of straights. We hold different, more demanding expectations and standards for marriage than people used to. Women now work outside the home, leads to more conflict and lower quality marriage. Decreases in job satisfaction, increase in marital discord. Women earn more money than they used to, divorce rates are higher when women are financially independent of men. Couples with money troubles are less content with their marriages. Household chores being divided more equitably (husbands less happy) We"re receiving less social support and companionship from friends and rely on our spouses more due to withdrawing from the community. People who are less connected to their communities are less affected by community norms that might discourage them from divorcing.
