Social structure is patterned, reliable behavior, often taken-for- granted. Functionalism aka the purpose, goal or outcome of the social structure. Society is the outcome of individuals behaving cooperatively. Society is held together by the interdependency of people behaving cooperatively. Society is analogous to the human body, i. e. , every part has a vital function, all parts must work together for the body to thrive. Social institutions, three primary and eight secondary, are the parts of a society. Social institutions such as religion create and are shaped by material and non-material culture. Manifest functions are the intended outcomes of each social institution. Latent functions are unintended outcomes which may be positive or negative.
