Document Summary

Hormones can reach all cells, only some have receptors for that hormone. Chemical signaling by hormones is function of the endocrine system (one of two basic systems for communication and regulation: secretes hormones, slower but longer-acting responses, reproduction, development, growth, behavior and energy metabolism. Other system is nervous system: high speed electrical signals alone cells called neurons. These signals regulate neurons, muscle cells and endocrine cells. Nervous & endocrine systems overlap target cells are near the secreting cell. Autocrine signaling is local regulator where target cells are the secreting cell. Pheromones are chemicals that are released into the environment and used to communicate with other individuals: defining territories, warning of predators, attracting potential mates, marking trails leading to food. Nitric oxide (no) functions as a local regulator and neurotransmitter: when oxygen levels fall no released and it activates an enzyme that relaxes the cells vasodilation increased blood flow to tissues.
