Document Summary

Ecosystem: possesses both abiotic and biotic componens. Abiotic: components that include the nonliving aspects such as sunlight, inorganic nutrients, and water availability. Conditions include soil, average temperature, and wind speed. Biotic: components of an ecosystem are the various populations of species that form the community. Autotrophs: self feeders, require only inorganic nutrients and an outside energy source to produce organic nutrients for their own use as food. They are called producers because they produce food for themselves and other members of the community. Heterotrophs: other feeders, need an outside source of organic nutrients. Because they consume food, they are called consumers. Herbivores: animals that feed directly on plants or algae. Carnivores: feed on other animals, eat meat. Example: herbivorous rabbits are primary consumers, snakes are secondary consumers, and hawks are tertiary consumers. Sometime tertiary consumers are called top predators. Omnivores: are animals, including humans, that feed on both plants and animals.
