Document Summary

When starting a study on how a certain gene transmits in organisms, start by making series of controlled experimental crosses: but this isn"t possible with humans. To understand transmission of human traits, human genotypes and phenotypes already existing must be analyzed. Mode of transmission - describes trait as autosomal or sex-linked and gives type of dominance of allele: to learn this, scientists construct a pedigree, pedigree - family tree of affected and unaffected individuals. Fun fact: by analyzing pedigrees, biomedical researchers able to discover how more than 2000 human genetic diseases are inherited. Pedigree records genetic relationships between individuals in family along with their sex and phenotype. If trait is ruled by one gene, then analyzing pedigree may show whether the given phenotype is due to a dominant/recessive allele and if the gene is on a sex chromosome or an autosome.
