Document Summary

Each organism has a certain number of chromosomes. Homologous chromosomes/homologs - same size and shape chromosomes: when in pairs, homologous pair. Homologous chromosomes are similar in content as well as size and shape. Gene - section of dna that influences some hereditary trait in individual. Versions of genes found on homologous chromosomes can differ: allele - different versions of the same gene. Homologous chromosomes carry the same genes but each homolog can contain different alleles. Karyotype - # of types of chromosomes present: vast majority of organisms have more than one of each type of chromosome. Diploid - organisms that have two versions of each type of chromosomes: humans, oak trees, insects, diploid organisms have two alleles of each gene. One carried on each of the homologous pairs of chromosomes. Haploid - organisms that contain just one of each type of chromosome: bacteria, algae and fungi, only one copy of each chromosome and one allele for each gene.
