15. 5 depressive and bipolar disorders: at the mercy of emotions. Mood disorders: mental disorders that have mood disturbance as their predominant feature: two main forms. People go from one end of the emotional pole (extreme depression) to the other (extreme mania) Major depressive disorder (unipolar depression): a severely depressed mood and/or inability to experience pleasure that lasts 2 or more weeks and is accompanied by feelings of worthlessness, lethargy, and sleep and appetite disturbance. Dysthymia: the same cognitive and bodily problems as in depression are present, but less severe and last longer (persisting for at least 2 years) Double depression: when both types co-occur; a moderately depressed mood that persists for at least 2 years and is punctuated by periods of major depression. Seasonal affective disorder (sad): recurrent depressive episodes in a seasonal pattern. Episodes usually begin in fall or winter and remit in spring. Mostly due to reduced level or light. Higher rates of depression in their families.
