Document Summary

The influence of nonverbal behaviors in compliance - gaining processes. Certain nonverbal behaviors can help make people more effeective & influential in interpersonal interactions. Meta-analysis is a method of statistically summarizing & combining the results of multiple past studies. Compliance rates were higher in the direct eye contact group vs. no eye contact group. More gaze from the source is assicated w/ more compliance from the target, although this relationship is not very powerful. Gaze from a source produced greater compliance than gaze aversion. The effect for gaze is very consistent. Touch appears to significantly increase compliance rates as 70% of those who were touched actually aggreed to fill out the survey. The ues of touch by a source increased compliance ffrom the target. The effect of touch is not large in magnitude but is fairly consistent across the 13 studies. Those in the near condition volunteered more time to the research project than those in the far condition.
