Document Summary
Approaches to personality: many approaches to studying facets of personality, psychodynamic approach, humanistic approach, traits approaches. Is there a biological basis for introversion/extroversion: hypothesis: neurophysiological arousal is the basis for individual differences in extraversion, introverts are more easily aroused than extraverts (arousal is aversive, introverts become more inhibited than extroverts (being social feels bad) Five factor theory the big five (mccrae and costa, 1999: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism. Neurophysiological mechanisms: eysenck believed arousal/alertness is the basis for individual differences in extraversion. Jeffrey gray (1987) expanded on this with his approach/inhibition model: 2 motivational functions: behavioral approach system (bas) and behaviors inhibition system (bis) Neurophysiological behavioral approach system (bas): system that allows us to approach rewarding stimuli, go system , stronger in extroverts behaviors inhibition system (bis), system that causes us to avoid danger or punishment, stop system , stronger in introverts.
