Most important function that families serve in all societies is to care for & socialize their young. Socialization - kids acquire beliefs, motives, values, & behaviors deemed significant & appropriate. It"s a means of regulating children"s behavior & controlling their undesirable impulses. Socialization promotes the personal growth of the individual. As kids interact, they become like others in their culture, acquire knowledge, skills, motives, & aspirations that help them adapt to & function effectively in their community. Socialized kids become competent, adaptive, prosocial adults who will impart what they have learned to their own kids. Family - 2 or more persons related by birth, marriage, adoption, or choice, who have emotional ties & responsibilities to each other. Traditional nuclear families - mom, dad, & 1st born child. Direct affects - any pair of family members affects & is affected by each other"s behavior. Family system - husband/ wife as well as mother/ infant & father / infant relationships.
