Person"s understanding of self is a reflection of how other people react to him. The self concept is the image cast by a social mirror. Believed self & social development are intertwined. Many believe infants are not born with sense of self. Others disagree, & think infants have capacity to distinguish self from environment. Proprioceptive feedback - sensory info that helps one know where their body parts are. Infants use this to mimic their caregiver"s facial expressions. Personal agency - knowing they are responsible for at least some of the events. Kids learn that they can share same perceptual experiences. Joint attention - both attend to same object at same time. Learned to point at at object to get companion"s attention to look at it too. Self - recognition - ability to recognize oneself in mirror. Rouge test - used to test self - recognition. Self - recognition often seen among 18-24 month olds.
