Chapter 11: Ethnicity and Race
Ethnic Groups and Ethnicity
-Ethnic groups: share certain beliefs, values, habits, customs and norms because of their
common background.
Define themselves by: language, religion, historical experience, geographic
placement, kinship, or race.
-Ethnicity: identification with, and feeling part of, a single ethnic group.
Ethnic identity fluctuates based on political changes or generational changes.
Shifting Status
-Situational negotiation of social identity: One identity is used in certain settings, another
one in different ones. (Ex. Black and Hispanic or mother and senator)
-Hispanics are the faste st growing ethnic group in the U.S.
-Cuban American s : richer than Chicanos & Puerto Rican s and vote Republican
-Race: ethnic group with shared genes
Human Biological Diversity and the Race Concept
-Racial classification: the attempt to assign humans to categories based on common
ancestry
-Phenotype: organism’s evident traits (anatomy/physiology) (skin color, hair form, eye
color, facial features= visible traits// blood groups, enzyme production= evident through
testing)
Problem with racial classification:
Based on phenotype raises problem of deciding which traits are most
important.
Inaccurate (ex. Caucasoid, Negroid, Mongoloid  Updated: Polynesian,
Amerindian)
