We saw him earlier too attached to natural things (food, wine, talk) to deal with the challenge. Here he is willing to give up all these things. And so he gets rewarded at a higher level. Absolute triumph of enlightenment and banishment of the others (into darkness) Whoever does not appreciate this knowledge, does not deserve to be considered a human being . Tended to develop an new set of oppositions: reason vs faith, (self)control vs. passion, irrational vs. rational behavior, reason vs. emotion . And it tended to not only raise one over the other but had the dream of a victory of one side over the other. In thinking oppositionally, the enlightenment bore within itself the danger of turning into its opposite.
