The building blocks of language: language consists of a hierarchy of unit types, which combine and recombine to form higher and higher level categories so that each person and press and understand innumerable new thoughts. The sound units: phonemes are the smallest significant unit of sound in language. Apt, tap, pat are same phoneme: languages differ from one another in sound, rhythm, use, patterning of stress and tone, and how the phonemes can occur together within syllables. Morphemes and words: morphemes are the smallest significant units that carry bits of meaning. Like boys, boy +s: content morphemes and function morphemes, content morphemes are morphemes that carry the main semantic and referential content of a sentence. Usually nouns, verbs, adjectives, or adverbs: function morphemes are morphemes that while adding such content as time, mode, individuation, and evidentially, also serves a grammatical purpose.
