Document Summary
Third major aspect of development (first two = sensorimotor and cognitive): child"s emerging capacity to function as a social and emotional being. Newborn keenly sensitive to own needs but largely oblivious to others"; young children master these points in a few short years. Close connections among various aspects of development: ability to function as a social being depends on cognition and emerging theory of mind; likewise, cognitive development is spurred by learning fro others (social interactions foster intellectual growth) Infants predisposed to look at human faces: newborn babies look longer at schematic faces than scrambled or blank. Tend to imitate faces: stick tongue out, make faces infants do same. 6 months: start to calm down, anticipating adult"s aid, as times of distress soon as hear approaching footsteps. If adult approaches and then does not pick up distressed child, infant is likely to protest loudly.
