We finally feel like a nation but there is also sectionalism going on. Shared nationalism: unites everyone and makes us one nation. Westward expansion- most everyone buys into the republican ideology. The u. s. is experiencing some new types of sectionalism. Before, the nation was divided into two parts: north and south. Now, it is divided into three parts: north, west, and south. North is still about commerce and trade. West is about expansion, fur trading, eliminating the native americans (biggest focus) Are tied to both the north and the south. Post-war issues that the nation is facing: The protective tariff: tax import goods to make our economy self-sufficient and to protect our farmers and manufacturers. Creates a fear of banks- people don"t trust banks and don"t use them anymore. American system (three pillars: a new national bank, tariffs on imported manufactured goods, federal financing of internal improvements. Happens under monroe because madison had vetoed it, saying it was unconstitutional.
