Others looked to the future they called for the south where the regions predominantly agriculture economy would be diversified by an expanding industrial sector. Thought to develop a strong industrial sector to go with its agricultural foundation. Also more efficient farming with new machinery and technical expertise. Dramatic expansion of textile industry which produced thread and cotton bedding and clothing. Dozens of dirt poor farm children rushed to take jobs in the mill villages that arose after the war. Seventy percent of mill workers were under the age of twenty-one and many were under the age of fourteen.
