So in 1870, using his own money, he began work at a site in turkey called hissarlik, believing that it was the site of ancient troy. A british archaeologist, frank calvert, was already digging near there but had found nothing. The site yielded many treasures including the foundations of a great walled city destroyed by fire in the 13th century bce. Scholars now agree that this was the site of ancient troy.
