Schools need to go from a factory model to a family model. When children reach the state of i don"t care, they are immune to both the consequences of their choices and the rewards we use in the attempt to motivate, bribe, teach or control them. With conscious discipline, medication comes from the relationships we build with each other. The am i safe? am i loved? situations should be apparent in classrooms. Like the book says, the school family shouldn"t replace a child"s home family, but creating a safe environment moves mountains in relation to your students" ability to learn. Kids react to these with defiance, revenge, and hatred. It"s tough work to walk them through their behavior (punishing is easy!) It"s so tough that sometimes kids will even ask to have their privileges taken away because internal problem solving is hard to do. The greatest ability human beings have ever been gifted with is the ability to adapt.
