HSC 3147 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Pharmacognosy, Active Ingredient, Drug Metabolism
Document Summary
Most drugs contain various components- active and inactive ingredients. Active ingredient: the pure, undiluted form of chemical that produces an effect but is rarely given alone, usually combined with one or more inactive ingredients. Inactive (aka inert) ingredient: ingredient that assists in the drug"s action and may also contain ingredients such as preservatives, colorings, and avorings. Pharmacokinetics: how the body processes drugs (what the body does to the drug) Absorption- movement of a drug from the site of administration into the blood. Distribution- movement of a drug from the blood into the tissues and cells. Metabolism (aka biotransformation)- physical and chemical alteration of the drug in the body. Excretion (aka elimination)- removal of waste products of drug metabolism from the body. Pharmacodynamics: drug actions on the body (what the drug does to the body) The site of action of a drug may be either local or systematic.
