The american academy of pediatrics (aap) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life and continuing breastfeeding for the first year. Breast milk is the ideal food for babies and has many advantages for both baby and mother: contains substances that help babies resist infections and other diseases. Breast fed babies have fewer ear infections and colds that experiences less diarrhea and vomiting. Has been shown to improve maternal health by reducing postpartum bleeding allowing for an earlier return to pre-pregnancy weight and reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Breastfeeding rates for women of all races have increased in the last decade. Healthy people 2020 objectives for breastfeeding are to increase the percentage of women ever breastfeeding to 82% and those breastfeeding at 6 months to 60% Breastfeeding rates are highest among children whose mothers are: college educated, women 30 years and older, married women.
