Public reasons (promoting civic engagement: becoming a critical thinker, functioning as an informed citizen, enhancing freedom of speech, promoting civil discourse. Similar to but different from conversation/group discussion. Transaction: exchange of verbal & nonverbal messages between 2+ people. System: collection of interdependent parts arranged so that a change in one produces corresponding changes in the remaining parts. Interdependence: a relationship in which things have a reciprocal influence on each other. Changes more pronounced than in other systems. Lines of communication increase geometrically as number of communicators increases. Consider physical situation, goal speaker seeks to fulfill. Feedback: audience member responses, both verbal & nonverbal, to a speaker.
