Infants display a variety of understandings earlier than piaget believed. Violation of expectation method: habituate babies to a physical event to familiarize them with a situation in which their knowledge will be tested. Or simply show an expected event and an unexpected event. Heightened attention to the unexpected event suggests infant is surprised by a deviation from physical reality and is aware of that aspect. Controversial: critics believe it indicates limited implicit awareness not full blown, conscious understanding indicated by piaget. Renee baillargeon found evidence for object permanence in the first few months of life (2. 5-3. 5 mo) using the violation of expectation method. Infants looked longer at the unexpected event suggesting some awareness that an object moved behind a screen would continue to exist. 4-5mo will track a ball"s path of movement as it disappears and reappears. Searching for a hidden object is more cognitively demanding. Baby must predict where the hidden object is.
