Document Summary

Endocrine glands manufacture hormones that influence cells in different parts of the body. Hormones enter bloodstream act directly on body tissues to induce growth or stimulate release of other hormones from endocrine glands elsewhere. Pituitary gland: releases the most important hormones for growth. Hypothalamus has receptors that detect hormone levels in the bloodstream. Feedback loop instructs pituitary gland to increase or decrease hormones. Growth hormone (gh): secreted continuously throughout life. Affects development of all tissues except the cns and genitals. Doubles during puberty gains in body size. Decreases after final adult height is reached. Acts directly on body and stimulates liver and epiphyses to release insulin like growth factor (igf-1) Deficiency can lead to short stature but can be alleviated by injections at young age. Thyroid stimulating hormone (tsh): stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine which is necessary for brain development and for gh to have full impact on body size.
