When parents hold entity view of ability, children"s self evaluations and school grades conform more closely to parental ability judgments. Children with learned helplessness tend to have parents who believe their child is not very capable and must work much harder than others to succeed. Trait statements encourage children to adopt an entity view of ability question competence in the face of setbacks and retreat from challenge. Girls tend to receive messages from teachers and parents that their ability is at fault when they do not do well and negative stereotypes reduce their interest and effort. Low ses, ethnic minority children receive less favorable feedback esp when in homogenous groups of poorly achieving students. Asian parents and teachers are more likely to hold an incremental view of ability and view trying hard as a moral responsibility. Americans focus on success b/c it enhances self esteem.
